Ocean Grove United hosted a concert and food
drive Friday, April 25th at the O’Brien Major VFW Post in
Neptune. Long–time fans of Often Annie and supporters of
OGU brought over 200 pounds of non-perishable food items which
were donated to The FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean County.
Ocean
Grove United is a group of Ocean Grove residents and business
owners committed to guaranteeing the civil rights of all members
of the community and to promoting the participation of all toward
the enhancement of Ocean Grove as a diverse and harmonious community.
Half-Annie,
half of the 70's and 80's Girl Band, Often Annie, performed at
a special benefit concert and entertained the crowd for nearly
3 hours. Approximately 100 fans clapped, sang, and danced to their
favorite tunes played by Judy Piserchia, Dot Maver and Ginny Stapinski,
three of the original band members.
Joan
Caputo, chairperson of OGU, provided a brief history of the organization
and encouraged the crowd to participate in events that are already
planned through September. Caputo reminded everyone that the “struggle
for equality in Ocean Grove is far from over.”
Since
its inception nearly a year ago, Ocean Grove United has grown
and expanded its membership by publicizing its goals and mission
and through its ongoing efforts to support the community and local
business. Caputo mad a special point of thanking all of the volunteers
who helped out, Half Annie for donating their considerable talents,
and the O’Brien Major VFW Post for their help and support.
Spring
and summer activities will be posted on OceanGroveUnited.org.
