40 never looked so good:
OG House Tour is July 18
The Historical Society of Ocean Grove will hold its 40th Annual House Tour on Friday, July 18, 2008. Yep – the turns a fabulous forty this year. Just think – when it started, Lyndon Baines Johnson was our president and a gallon of gas was probably 40 cents. Hey – things change – except for the beautiful architecture of Ocean Grove.

The tour is a walking tour within this Victorian community. The tour will include guided tours of eight of the most beautiful and historic homes in Ocean Grove as well as three of the famous tent homes. Several of the homes have received the Beersheba Award for Historic Preservation. (See below.)

There will also be stops at the Great Auditorium, the Historical Society Museum and Centennial Cottage. The tour will begin at 10:30 a.m. from the Museum on Auditorium square and ends at 4:30 pm. Transportation to the tour stops will be available.

Tickets for the House Tour will be available at the Museum, 50 Pitman Ave., which is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Tickets will also be sold on the day of the tour if available. Tickets sales are limited. Tickets purchased prior to the day of the house tour are $25, and the day of the tour $30. Tickets will be available by mail until July 7.

Send check or money order along with a stamped self addressed envelope to HSOG, PO Box 446, Ocean Grove, NJ 07756, or you may call the museum, to order tickets using your MasterCard, Visa, or Discover Card up to July 16. Tickets will also be available at Tina’s, The Loft, and Gingerbreads, all on Main Avenue.

Its recommend tickets be purchased early as tickets are limited. Children under twelve are not admitted. The tour goes rain or shine.

13th Annual Beersheba Award Winners

Recipients of the 2008 13th Beersheba Preservation Awards, sponsored by the Historical Society of Ocean Grove, were announced last month by Ray Russomano, President.

“We all inherit the rewards of those individuals, homeowners, and businesses which have revitalized, restored, and preserved their properties in this very special town of ours” Mr. Russomano said.

Civic Awards are given to individuals or groups for their contributions to the preservation, natural resources or cultural life of Ocean Grove. John Case, contractor will be honored for his unselfish work on the Beersheba Well and Centennial Cottage. A second Civic Award will be presented to Darvin Adams, electrician, for his many hours of service to the HSOG Museum.

The following Homeowner Awards were announced. The winning houses are 90 Abbott Avenue, 15 Broadway, 81Broadway, 124 Clark Avenue, 114 Cookman Avenue, 70 ½ Heck Avenue, 128 Heck Avenue, 81 Inskip Avenue, 66 Lake Avenue, 124 Mt. Hermon Way.

The New Construction Awards was given to 128 Abbott Avenue & 77 Mt. Carmel Way.

The Commercial Award was given to 18 Atlantic Avenue for their outstanding renovation of their 4-story Condo building.

Streetscape Awards are usually provided to a block or series of houses for their overall appearance and upkeep. This year the Award was presented to the Beautification Committee for their diligent & tireless upkeep of the Broadway entrance and Broadway Urn.
