Sunday July 20, 2008 - ASBURY PARK SURF FILM FESTIVAL - Screening of BUSTIN DOWN THE DOOR and SURFWISE in the Historic Carousel Building, Abury Park; Q&A with surfing legends Shaun Thompson and Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew.

7:30 pm - BUSTIN DOWN THE DOOR - During the winter of 1975 in Hawaii, surfing was shaken to its core. A group of young surfers from Australia and South Africa sacrificed everything and put it all on the line to create a sport, a culture, and an industry that is today worth billions of dollars and has captured the imagination of the world. With a radical new approach and a brash colonial attitude, these surfers crashed headlong into a culture that was not ready for revolution. Surfing was never to be the same again. 9:00 pm- SURFWISE - Like many American outsider-adventurers, Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz set out to realize a utopian dream. Abandoning a successful medical practice, he sought self-fulfillment by taking up the nomadic life of a surfer. But unlike other American searchers like Thoreau or Kerouac, Paskowitz took his wife and nine children along for the ride, all eleven of them living in a 24 foot camper. Together, they lived a life that would be unfathomable to most, but enviable to anyone who ever relinquished their dreams to a straight job. The Paskowitz Family proved that America may be running out of frontiers, but it hasn't run out of frontiersmen.

Beginning Saturday, August 16 - The 33rd Annual Clearwater Festival, New Jersey's oldest and largest eco-festival, will be Saturday and Sunday August 16-17 at Sunset Park in Asbury Park. The slogan of this year’s event is “It’s Up To Us”. The major theme is Environmental Justice. Our keynote speaker is Lois Marie Gibbs, heroine of the Love Canal disaster. This family friendly event combines information on the environment with live music performed by top-rated international and local performers on two stages. A third stage, “Circle of Song” performance area, is where festival participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments and voice and join in the fun.

The Clearwater Festival is proud to announce that among this year’s talented artists are Glen Burtnik, Christine Martucci Band, Mean Venus, The Verdict, Bob Burger, Vini Lopez w/Steel Mill, Chik-A-Boom, Almost There, Pat Guadagno, Mimi Cross, Chris Morrisey, Great Blue, Gary and Debbie, Ingrid Heldt, Lackawanna Rail, Hudson River Sloop Singers, Mel & Vinnie, Spook Handy, Rik Palieri, Dan Einbender, Bill Hudson, Jan Christenson, and Winner of Battle of Bands. We will also have Award Winning Children's Acts including Fun with Arlene, Polka Dot, and Kids at Our House. Our Sunday headliner is Glen Burtnik, a former member of the million-album selling rock band Styx, and co-writer of the 1992 number 1 song “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough”

You will also find traditional summer festival fare including food, crafts, storytelling, and a special children's area. The event takes place appropriately in a beautiful shady park on a lake just blocks from the Atlantic Ocean from 11am until 7pm on both days. Admission is only $10 for adults, $3 for seniors, low income, or teenagers 13-17 years, and children under 12 and younger are free. The event is handicapped accessible and sign language interpreters are available. If you want to keep up with additional acts and schedules or are activists, crafters, food vendors, and “green” vendors interested in participating can contact the Friends of Clearwater at 732-872-9644.
